Questions
Question.
Did you study music? Is a course at college a good idea?
Answer.
I didn't study music at all, I did a course in journalism and broadcasting, and was aiming for a full time job in Radio and Television, ideally at the BBC. In the end my course was not particularly useful to me, I did it mainly because it offered two month long work experience placements with media organisations. Work experience like that is a very valuable way to get a foot in the door with a media company.
There are now many courses in sound, music and music technology around the country. It can be great way to learn about the technology, but don't expect it to lead on naturally to a career, the competition is fierce and jobs are few. The number of professional recording studios has fallen dramatically, as the new technology has taken over. At a conservative estimate at any one time, there could be over two thousand fully qualified pro-tools engineers, just out of college, looking for work - and probably about five jobs!
If you're looking for a course, check out the work experience possibilities. When you are at college, make sure you go and listen to any visiting lecturers from the business, show an interest, be enthusiastic and talk to them afterwards, you never know where that connection may lead.
If you are just out of college London is where most of the work is. If you're adventurous, it might also be worth looking abroad, particularly at developing countries like China and India.
